My name is Jenny Nicol, holistic nutritionist, yoga teacher, meditation guide, retreat host and writer for Sweat Equity Magazine. My articles and recipes have been published in a number of Canadian magazines as well as in the top selling vegan bodybuilding and fitness book by Robert Cheeke, “Shred it!”

I have been living dairy-free for 9 years and my only regret, is not ditching dairy sooner!

We asked a few questions about her dairy-free lifestyle as part of this series, Living Dairy Free:

Why are you dairy-free?

I choose not to consume dairy for both health and environmental reasons. I did extensive research into dairy while in nutrition school and found zero benefit to keeping it in my diet. On the contrary, I discovered a number of reasons why I should remove it.

Dairy causes inflammation, mucus and is at the top of the list of food allergens.

Also, the dairy industry is excessively cruel, unsustainable and a significant source of pollution.

With so many delicious alternatives widely available, now is the time to ditch dairy for good!

Top favourite dairy-free products?

Of course YOSO tops my list! I love the unsweetened coconut yogurt. It is the creamiest, tastiest yogurt ever! I enjoy it plain, or build a parfait with fruit and nuts; I also use it for dips and dressings. It’s so versatile.

Daiya brand cheese shreds in mozzarella flavor. Perfect for topping homemade pizza or pasta dishes.

Silk brand, unsweetened almond milk. I use it as the base in energy shakes, overnight chia oats and baking recipes. Sometimes I drink a small glass over ice topped with a generous sprinkling of cinnamon.

Vegan Stokes handcrafted cheeses. Smoked Gouda style is my fav! Super-yum!

Favourite local spot to eat that accommodates dairy-free?

My favourite local spot to eat dairy-free is Live Organic Food. I’ve been going to this plant-based eatery for over a decade. It’s an absolute must if you haven’t already tried it. Desserts to die for!

Favourite place to shop for groceries?

Kensington Market. I love being able to walk around and get everything I need from fresh local produce and herbs, to spices and vitamins. It’s important to me to support small businesses and vendors as often as possible.
